Does anyone else have make up brush allergies? Or maybe it's the make up...?

My eye allergies started with Mary Kay purple eye shadow about 5 years ago-it was totally out of the blue. Since then I've steered clear of purples and come to find out pinks - but every now and then, no matter the color, my eyes break out horribly. They puff up so bad I can barely open them! A friend suggested it was my brushes (they're the same Merle Norman brushes I've had for years). I stopped using them and that helped but it STILL happened when a professional MAC artist came to my house and used her clean brushes.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? It may be something to do with synthetic vs. animal hair brushes but I can't figure out what Merle Norman brushes are made from. Help! I'm getting married in 2 weeks and don't want to be the scary puffed-eye bride!

I have the same problem! Kinda strange but I couldn't use synthetic brushes, something about them made my skin itchy and blotchy. I use natural hair brushes now and clean the regularly. If you have been using natural hair brushes try using synthetic or vice versa. My other suggestion would be to use q-tips and cottong balls to apply makeup. I did that before I changed brushes.

I agree with the above comment.

Also, I would suggest using mineral make-ups. You might be allergic to unseen chemicals in the make-ups. Try using natural brushes and natural make-ups. It should help!

Good luck and congratulations!

I'm not sure about the brushes, but it could be the actual make up. I had a similar problem with all Covergirl make up, it makes my eyes puff up and tear. I would try using Physicians Formula or Almay make up and brushes, the Physicians Formula is natural and the Almay is hypoallergenic. I only use those and I haven't had any problems since. Best of luck to you and congratulations on your marriage!

Ohh my...Uhh probably not enough time to get an allergy test. I would try both kinds of brushes like now before the wedding with a more neutral color so you know if it would be the brush and not the pink or purple and then just try different things and then take a benedryl if you start to get an allergic reaction and wash your eyes with a makeup remover really well. Just try as many scenarios as you can or even try the makeup your going to wear for your wedding because you don't want to have big puffy eyes that day... Good luck and congrats!! :)

I agree with other answers in that it's probably more your makeup that your makeup brushes. I would try mineral eyeshadows. These shadows usually don't contain the harsh ingredients often found in drugstore and department store brands such as MAC.

To rule out your brushes, try applying with your finger or a q-tip. If it's still bothering you, then I'd say switch makeup!.
