I know this has been asked before, but there always seems to be a different answer. So, the specifics.
My dogs are 5 month old Shelties and are in the second teething stage. Because they are a smaller breed and prone to tooth problems, I would prefer to have a regular cleaning routine. I do their major grooming once a week (clipping nails, trimming foot hair, etc.).
The definitive (although somewhat old) book on Shelties suggests once a month cleaning (which includes scaling, if needed). However, I think once a month is not frequent enough to get the dogs comfortable with the process.
Daily is a bit onerous for me. Is weekly frequent enough?

Once a month is enough, but there are some dog tooth cleaning specific treats that I give my dog both daily and weekly (daily biscuit, weekly greenie bone). He is 5 years old and his vet says he has perfect teeth, with no plaque buildup!

I asked my vet when I should clean my dogs teeth, and he told me to put gravy on my finger, and brush the teeth with my finger.
I think that vet was crazy, because my dog would bite my finger off if I tryed that.

you should brush their teeth about 4 or 5 times a week to prevent decation but to tell you the truth, you really dont have to brush their teeth because they have rabies it usually kills all the germs in their mouth except mouth odors so if you want the mouth to smell good then brush their teeth maybe once a week.Next for their nails and stuff do it regularly like washing them,2 times a week is preety good enough.and their nails cut it maybe once in two weeks or so.lastly not to waste money......just cut its fur about 3cm so that you will use less dog shapoo if it grows over you definately need to cut its fur.

I bath my dog once a week and when it's time to bath them I brush their teeth. It works out well. Brushing weekly is good enough for my dogs as they chew a lot of chew bones and have their teeth regularly cleaned by a vet every year. When they were younger I didn't find it necessary to brush or have the vet attend to their teeth, but they're now 5 and 6 years old and I have been following the dental routine for about two years now. Teeth are important to keep clean as to prevent gingivitis which can cause heart problems, teeth can also become infected, loose and in some toy breeds quite rotten.

How about not brushing a dogs teeth at all and just supplying a nice raw meaty bone to chew on once a week. It provides hours of chewing pleasure and scrapes the teeth clean as nature intended. A raw meaty soup bone from the supermarket is the answer to dental health for dogs.

I have a 16 month old Bichonpoo she weighs 11 1/2 pounds. My vet recommends daily tooth brushing but says a minimum of 5 times a week.

At least once a week, but more often is better. Perhaps twice a week?
