What does it mean to saw when you try to get a mat out of a dogs hair?

I am taking my dog to be groomed next week, but she has a mat. Normally, I don't let this happen and brush her everyday. She is quite spoiled, so please don't think I am neglecting her. Anyway, the directions say saw with the brush I bought. I know what "saw" means in the literal sense, but what does this mean when I am grooming my dog. If I move the device like a saw, it does not do anything. Thank you!

Depending on the type of hair, size of the mat, and type of brush you bought, breaking up a mat can be simple or difficult, painful and frustrating. A small mat can be pretty easily fixed by using a detangler or conditioner directly on the mat and slowly and gently pulling the tangled hair apart with your hands. Try to hold the hair closest to the skin with one hand and work on the mat with the other, if it seems to be pulling and hurting the dog. In general, work from the outside in.

Cutting out the mat is possible, but will make a hole in the coat that might not be very attractive.

They make dematting tools that are sold at pet stores. They are a little like "saws", but are also a little dangerous to use in inexperienced hands. It is easy to cut the dog with the blade, if you work near the skin. If this is the brush you bought, be sure to stay well away from the skin, hold the hair between the skin and the brush, and use a sawing motion away from the dog. Work on the ends first and move toward the dog as the ends are released.

It's best not to bathe your dog with the mat in the hair. It makes it tighter and harder to detangle. Remove the mat before you bathe him/her.

Again, all depends on the breed of dog, etc. If it is painful for the dog or becomes a fight between the two of you, it is probably best to wait to take the dog to the groomer. Mats do not reflect neglect on the owner's part. The groomer may find a skin problem that is causing your dog to scratch or rub that area, creating the mat. They can also teach you techniques to find and brush out mats before they become too tangled or large.

Good luck. You sound like a great owner!

A Back and forth motion.

Let the groomer worry about it! I cut the mats out of my dogs hair. Seems you are doing like some other people. They clean their house before the maid gets there! NEVER heard of sawing with a brush!

Hmmm, mine didn't say that. I just went through this with my new adoptee. He came to us with massively matted hair but since it wasn't against the skin, I came here looking for answers and found a great one that my vet confirmed the next day. I took a couple of tablespoons of human conditioner and mixed it in a hand water spray bottle with 2 cups of water. Shook it up until it was mixed thoroughly. I sprayed the matts and works it in with my fingers really good then let it set for about 3 minutes or so. Then I began, slowly, with the dematting brush, held the matt from behind to prevent pulling, and gently worked through each individual matt. Took some time but worked great!

It means a back %26amp; forth motion, but you need to get underneath the matted fur. Next to the skin. Most brushes do not work very well for removing mats anyway. There's a tool we groomers use called a de-matter. It usually has 4-5 blades on it. You can get 1 at most pet stores. They can be expensive though. %26amp; are really best used by a pro as it can injure the dog if used improperly. If you decide to do it yourself, please be very careful, %26amp; do the sawing motion gently. Hope this helps!

I am not sure what kind of tool you are talking about. Never heard of sawing with a brush though! I'd suggest taking the dog to your groomers and letting her show you what tool to use and how to split a mat and remove it. I used to be a groomer and would show people all the time.

I used scissors or different mat splitters. The only thing about scissors is if you are not sure how to use them you can stab or cut your dog. That's why I say take her to the groomer's and let your groomer show you.
